Vela Jiménez

fl. 882–883 · 9th century

Vela Jiménez was count of Álava in the late 9th century, one of the frontier lords of the Kingdom of Asturias. The Asturian chronicles record him defending the castle of Cellorigo against the armies of the Emirate of Córdoba in 882 and 883. Álava was then a largely Basque-speaking frontier district facing the upper Ebro, later drawn into the orbit of Castile and Navarre.
