Vel' d'Hiv Roundup

16–17 July 1942 · 20th century · Also known as Rafle du Vel' d'Hiv

The Vel' d'Hiv Roundup was a mass arrest of Jews in Paris on 16–17 July 1942, carried out by French police under the Vichy government at German request. About 13,000 people, including some 4,000 children, were seized; many were held in the Vélodrome d'Hiver cycling stadium before deportation to Auschwitz, and very few survived. France officially acknowledged its responsibility in 1995.
