Reja de San Millán

1025 · 11th century

The Reja de San Millán is a document of 1025 preserved by the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, listing the villages of Álava that owed the monastery a yearly tribute of iron. Naming some three hundred settlements grouped by district, it is the main early source for the settlement pattern of Álava and preserves some of the oldest written forms of Basque place names.
