Corte

Corte is a town in the mountainous centre of Corsica, overlooked by a citadel on a rocky spur above the Tavignano and Restonica rivers. Pasquale Paoli made it the capital of the independent Corsican Republic from 1755 and founded a university there in 1765. The university was closed after the French conquest of 1769 and reopened in 1981 as the University of Corsica.
