Pasquale Paoli

1725–1807 · 18th century

Pasquale Paoli was a Corsican patriot elected general of the nation in 1755. He governed the island as an independent republic under a written constitution admired across Enlightenment Europe, until France bought Corsica from Genoa and defeated him at Ponte Novu in 1769. Returning during the Revolution, he broke with France and created the Anglo-Corsican Kingdom in 1794, dying in exile in London.
