Casbah of Algiers

Also known as Kasbah of Algiers

The Casbah of Algiers is the old walled town of Algiers, rising on a steep hill above the harbour and crowned by the citadel built in the Ottoman period. Its maze of narrow streets, houses, palaces and mosques dates largely from the time of the Regency, when it was the seat of the deys from 1817. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and was a stronghold of the Algerian War of independence.
