Ceawlin of Wessex

d. 593 · 6th century

Ceawlin was a king of the West Saxons in the later sixth century, listed by Bede as the second of the kings who held authority over the southern English. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle credits him with victories over the Britons, notably at Dyrham in 577, which brought Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath under West Saxon control. He was driven out after a battle at Woden's Barrow in 592 and died the following year.
