Central Valley (Costa Rica)
The Central Valley is a highland basin in the middle of Costa Rica, containing the cities of San José, Cartago, Heredia and Alajuela. Its fertile volcanic soils and mild climate made it the centre of Spanish settlement and, from the 1830s, of coffee growing, whose exports created both a wealthy elite and a large class of smallholders.
