Ceylon Independence Act 1947
The Ceylon Independence Act 1947 was an act of the British Parliament that granted independence to Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, as a dominion within the Commonwealth. It came into force on 4 February 1948, together with the Soulbury Constitution and agreements with Britain on defence and external affairs. The British monarch remained head of state, represented by a governor-general, until Ceylon became the republic of Sri Lanka in 1972.
