CFA franc

1945 · 20th century · Also known as West African CFA franc, Central African CFA franc

The CFA franc is the name of two currencies used in West and Central Africa, created by France in December 1945 for its African colonies. After independence it survived as the West African CFA franc and the Central African CFA franc, each issued by a regional central bank, pegged first to the French franc and since 1999 to the euro and guaranteed by the French Treasury.
