Ch'ol people

Also known as Ch'ol Maya

The Ch'ol are a Maya people whose language belongs to the Cholan branch of the Mayan family; today most live in northern Chiapas, Mexico. In the colonial period the Lacandon Ch'ol and the Manche Ch'ol of the southern lowland forests resisted Spanish rule until the late 17th century, after which many were resettled in the Guatemalan highlands, where most died of disease.
