Bamako
Bamako is the capital and largest city of Mali, on the Niger River in the south-west of the country. A small trading town when French troops built a fort there in 1883, it became the capital of the colony of Upper Senegal and Niger in 1908 and later of French Sudan, linked to the coast by the Dakar–Niger Railway. It has been Mali's capital since independence in 1960.
