Charles-Denis Bourbaki

1816–1897 · 19th century

Charles-Denis Bourbaki was a French general of Greek descent who commanded the Imperial Guard in 1870 and then the Army of the East in the Franco-Prussian War. After failing to relieve Belfort, his defeated army of about 87,000 men crossed into Switzerland in February 1871, where it was disarmed and interned, an event depicted in the Bourbaki Panorama at Lucerne.
