Chernobyl disaster

1986 · 20th century

The Chernobyl disaster was the explosion and fire at reactor No. 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukrainian SSR on 26 April 1986, the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. Radioactive fallout spread over much of Europe, with Ukraine and Belarus worst affected, and more than 100,000 people were evacuated from the zone around the plant. Initial Soviet secrecy damaged trust in the government and fed national movements.
