Chernivtsi
Chernivtsi is a city in western Ukraine on the Prut river, the historic capital of Bukovina. Under Austrian rule from 1775 it was known as Czernowitz and grew into a multinational, largely German-speaking city with a large Jewish population and a university founded in 1875. It belonged to Romania between the world wars and was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940.
