Chertsey Abbey

666–1537 · 7th century

Chertsey Abbey was a Benedictine abbey at Chertsey in Surrey, England, founded in 666 by Eorcenwald, later Bishop of London, and endowed by the sub-king Frithuwold. Sacked by the Vikings in the 9th century, it was refounded in the 10th century and became one of the richest abbeys in England. It was dissolved in 1537 and almost entirely demolished.
