Frithuwold

7th century · 7th century

Frithuwold was a sub-king of Surrey in the 670s, ruling under Wulfhere of Mercia, and the only known ruler of the province. He is known from a charter of around 672–674 granting extensive lands along the Thames to Chertsey Abbey. The charter, which survives in later copies, shows Surrey as a dependency of the Kingdom of Mercia.
