Cosimo III de' Medici

1642–1723 · 17th century

Cosimo III de' Medici was Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1670 to 1723, the longest reign of the dynasty. Deeply pious, he imposed strict religious and moral regulation, including laws against Jews and against sexual offences, while the economy stagnated and taxes rose. His sons died childless or proved unable to continue the line, and he tried in vain to secure the succession of his daughter Anna Maria Luisa against the plans of the great powers.
