Democratic Party (United States)
The Democratic Party is one of the two major political parties of the United States, organised in the 1820s around supporters of Andrew Jackson and descended from Thomas Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans. It contested elections against the Whigs and, from the 1850s, the Republican Party. In the 20th century it became the party of the New Deal and of civil rights legislation, with strong support among labour unions.
