Democratic Party of Albania

1990 · 20th century

The Democratic Party of Albania is a centre-right party founded in December 1990, the first opposition party allowed under the communist regime. Led by Sali Berisha, it won the 1992 elections, ending communist rule, and governed until the collapse of pyramid investment schemes in 1997, and again from 2005 to 2013. Its rivalry with the Socialist Party has dominated Albanian politics since.
