The destruction of Mari refers to the sack of the city of Mari on the Middle Euphrates by Hammurabi of the Babylonian Empire in 1761 BCE. Mari, once an ally of Babylon under King Zimri-Lim, was conquered and its palace destroyed, removing a powerful rival. Its archives, preserved in the ruins, are a major source for the period.
