Dorchester-on-Thames
Dorchester-on-Thames is a village in Oxfordshire on the River Thame near its confluence with the Thames. A Roman small town, it lay at the heart of early West Saxon settlement, and in 635 Bishop Birinus baptised King Cynegils there and made it the seat of the first West Saxon bishopric. Later the seat of a Mercian bishopric until 1072, it keeps its large medieval abbey church.
