Dutch–Hanseatic War

1438–1441 · 15th century

The Dutch–Hanseatic War was a naval and trade war from 1438 to 1441 between the Wendish towns of the Hanseatic League, led by Lübeck, and the towns of Holland and Zeeland, which were challenging Hanseatic control of the Baltic trade. Privateers on both sides attacked shipping. The Peace of Copenhagen of 1441 opened the Baltic to Dutch merchants, marking the decline of Hanseatic dominance.
