Eleutheria (Plataea)
The Eleutheria was a festival of freedom held at Plataea in Boeotia in honour of Zeus Eleutherios, commemorating the Greek victory over the Persians there in 479 BCE. Celebrated every four years with games, including a race in armour, it was accompanied by yearly rites at the graves of the fallen, which the Plataeans were charged to tend. It continued into Roman times.
