Emperor Yūryaku

late 5th century · 5th century · Also known as Wakatakeru

Emperor Yūryaku was the 21st emperor of Japan in traditional reckoning, who probably reigned in the later 5th century. He is generally identified with King Bu of Wa in Chinese records and with the great king Wakatakeru named on the Inariyama and Eta Funayama swords, evidence that Yamato authority then reached from Kyushu to eastern Japan. The Nihon shoki portrays him as a forceful and violent ruler.
