Eugene V. Debs

1855–1926 · 20th century · Also known as Eugene Victor Debs, Eugene Debs

Eugene V. Debs was an American socialist activist and trade unionist, a founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World and five times the Socialist Party of America's candidate for president. He helped found the American Railway Union and led its boycott of trains with Pullman cars in the Pullman Strike of 1894, which affected more than 250,000 workers in 27 states until President Grover Cleveland used the army to break it. Jailed for six months for defying an injunction against the strike, he came out a committed socialist.
