Fall of the Berlin Wall

1989 · 20th century · Also known as Fall of the Wall

The fall of the Berlin Wall on the night of 9 November 1989 was the moment when East Germany, facing mass protests and the flight of its citizens to the West, opened the crossings through the wall that had divided Berlin since 1961. A confused announcement that travel restrictions were lifted 'immediately' sent crowds to the checkpoints, and the overwhelmed guards let them through. Berliners began to chip away at the wall, which was demolished over the following months, and the event became the symbol of the end of the Cold War in Europe.
