False Waldemar

d. 1356 · 14th century

The False Waldemar was an impostor who appeared in Brandenburg in 1348 claiming to be Margrave Waldemar, the last great Ascanian ruler, who had died in 1319. Recognised for political reasons by the future Emperor Charles IV and backed by many towns, he challenged the Wittelsbach margrave Louis the Brandenburger until Charles abandoned him in 1350. He died in Anhalt in 1356.
