Fort Zeelandia (Suriname)

Fort Zeelandia is a fortress on the Suriname River at Paramaribo. Built by the English colonists of Willoughbyland, it was captured in February 1667 by a fleet from Zeeland under Abraham Crijnssen and renamed after that province. It remained the centre of Dutch military power in the colony, and in December 1982 it was the scene of the December murders, when fifteen critics of the military regime were killed.
