Suriname River
The Suriname River flows about 480 kilometres north from the interior of Suriname to the Atlantic, passing Paramaribo near its mouth, where it is joined by the Commewijne. The first lasting English colony was founded on its banks in 1650, and plantations and the Jewish settlement of Jodensavanne lined its lower course. Since 1964 the Afobaka Dam has held back the Brokopondo Reservoir on its middle course.
