García I of León

c. 871–914 · 9th century

García I was the eldest son of Alfonso III of Asturias and the first king of León. He rebelled against his father, who around 910 divided the realm among his sons, leaving García the lands of León, with Galicia going to Ordoño II and Asturias to Fruela II. He moved the centre of royal power south to the city of León and pressed resettlement towards the Douro, but died in 914, when León passed to Ordoño II.
