Gommateshwara statue

c. 983 · 10th century

The Gommateshwara statue is a monolithic stone statue of the Jain figure Bahubali, about 17 metres high, on the hill of Vindhyagiri at Shravanabelagola in Karnataka, India. It was commissioned around 983 by Chavundaraya, minister and general of the Western Ganga kings, and is one of the largest free-standing statues in the world. Every twelve years Jain pilgrims gather for the Mahamastakabhisheka, when the statue is anointed.
