Grand Embassy of Peter the Great

1697–1698 · 17th century

The Grand Embassy was a Russian diplomatic mission to western Europe in 1697–1698, formally led by Franz Lefort and Fyodor Golovin, in which Tsar Peter I travelled incognito as Pyotr Mikhailov. It sought allies against the Ottoman Empire and recruited specialists, while Peter studied shipbuilding at Zaandam, Amsterdam and Deptford. He cut it short to deal with the streltsy revolt of 1698, returning determined to westernise Russia.
