Guided Democracy in Indonesia

1959–1965 · 20th century · Also known as Demokrasi Terpimpin

Guided Democracy was the political system of Indonesia under Sukarno from 1959 to 1965. After he restored the 1945 constitution by decree in July 1959, parliament lost much of its power and Sukarno ruled by balancing the army against the Communist Party, under slogans of national unity and continuing revolution. It brought confrontation abroad and economic collapse at home, and ended after the 30 September Movement of 1965 brought Suharto to power.
