Suharto

1921–2008 · 20th century

Suharto was an Indonesian army general who took power after the failed coup of 1965, during mass killings of alleged communists, and was president from 1967 to 1998. His New Order regime brought rapid economic growth and stability but also the invasion of East Timor, repression and vast corruption. The Asian financial crisis and mass protests forced him to resign in 1998.
