Hintsa kaKhawuta

c. 1790–1835 · 19th century

Hintsa kaKhawuta was king of the Gcaleka Xhosa, paramount among the Xhosa chiefs, from about 1820 to 1835. During the Sixth Frontier War the British accused him of harbouring cattle taken from the Cape Colony, and he came to the camp of Governor Benjamin D'Urban to negotiate. Held as a hostage, he was shot dead while trying to escape in May 1835, and his body was mutilated.
