Hòa Hảo

1939 · 20th century · Also known as Hoa Hao

Hòa Hảo is a Vietnamese Buddhist reform movement founded in 1939 by Huỳnh Phú Sổ in the Mekong Delta village of Hòa Hảo. It stresses simple lay devotion over temples and clergy and quickly won a mass peasant following. In the 1940s and 1950s it had its own armed forces, fighting the Viet Minh and later Ngô Đình Diệm's government.
