Hugo Chávez

1954–2013 · 20th century

Hugo Chávez was a Venezuelan army officer who led a failed coup in 1992 and was elected president in 1998. A new constitution in 1999 renamed the country the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Funded by oil revenue, his government nationalised industries, expanded social programmes and opposed the United States, while concentrating power. He ruled until his death in 2013.
