Hugo Spadafora

1940–1985 · 20th century

Hugo Spadafora was a Panamanian physician and guerrilla fighter who served in the government of Omar Torrijos and fought in Nicaragua, first with the Sandinistas and later against them. A vocal critic of Manuel Noriega, whom he accused of drug trafficking, he was seized and murdered after crossing into Panama from Costa Rica in September 1985. His beheaded body was found in Costa Rica, and the case became a symbol of the regime's crimes.
