István Széchenyi

1791–1860 · 19th century

Count István Széchenyi was a Hungarian reformer and statesman, called 'the greatest Hungarian' by his rival Lajos Kossuth. He funded the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1825, promoted steam navigation on the Danube and the regulation of the Tisza, and initiated the Chain Bridge between Buda and Pest. His books urged the nobility to give up its privileges, and he served in the government of 1848.
