Iwakura Mission

1871–1873 · 19th century

The Iwakura Mission was a Japanese embassy that toured the United States and Europe from 1871 to 1873, led by Iwakura Tomomi with Kido Takayoshi, Ōkubo Toshimichi and Itō Hirobumi. It failed to revise the unequal treaties, but it studied Western government, industry, education and military systems, and its findings shaped the modernising reforms of the Meiji government.
