Unequal treaties

Unequal treaties is a term for agreements imposed on East Asian states by Western powers in the nineteenth century, granting privileges such as extraterritoriality, fixed tariffs and treaty ports. China and Japan were both subject to them. The desire to revise these treaties was a powerful motive behind Japan's rapid modernisation after the Meiji Restoration.
