Jakob Erhardt was a German missionary of the Church Missionary Society who worked with Johann Krapf on the East African coast from 1849. He visited the Shambaa kingdom of Kimweri ye Nyumbai and studied local languages. In 1856 he drew a map of a great inland sea based on caravan reports, which helped inspire Burton and Speke's expedition to the lakes.
