Johann Rudolf Wettstein

1594–1666 · 17th century

Johann Rudolf Wettstein was mayor of Basel from 1645 and the leading Swiss diplomat of his time. At the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 he obtained recognition that the Swiss Confederacy was exempt from the jurisdiction of the Holy Roman Empire, in effect its formal independence. The achievement made him one of the most honoured figures in the history of Basel.
