Person
John I of Gaeta
John I was hypatus, or ruler, of Gaeta in the early 10th century, succeeding his father Docibilis I, founder of the dynasty. He joined the alliance of Pope John X, Byzantium and the southern Italian princes that destroyed the Saracen colony on the Garigliano in 915, and he received the Byzantine title of patrician. Under him and his family Gaeta became a prosperous independent city-state.
