K'ak'upakal

9th century · 9th century · Also known as Kakupacal

K'ak'upakal, "Fire Shield", was a lord of Chichen Itza in the second half of the 9th century and the figure most often named in the city's hieroglyphic inscriptions, which date from about 869 to 890. He appears to have shared power with relatives in a broad ruling group rather than reigning alone. Colonial-era Maya chronicles remember a Kakupacal as a war captain of the Itza.
