Kamehameha II

1797–1824 · 19th century · Also known as Liholiho, ʻIolani

Kamehameha II, born Liholiho, was the second king of the Kingdom of Hawaii, from the death of his father Kamehameha I in 1819 until his own in 1824. Young and inexperienced, he was held to a largely ceremonial role by his father's wife Kaʻahumanu, who became the first Kuhina Nui. Six months into his reign he ate a meal with Kaʻahumanu and his mother Keōpūolani, breaking the kapu system of religious laws in the 'Ai Noa; the priesthood was disbanded, temples and images were destroyed and his forces defeated the defenders of the old religion at the Battle of Kuamoʻo. He sailed to London in 1823, where he and Queen Kamāmalu died of measles in 1824.
