1889–1942 · 20th century

Karel Doorman was a Dutch rear admiral who commanded the combined Allied naval striking force in the Netherlands East Indies in early 1942. On 27 February 1942 his fleet of Dutch, British, American and Australian ships was defeated by a Japanese force in the Battle of the Java Sea, and he went down with his flagship, the cruiser De Ruyter. The Dutch navy later named ships after him.
