Aceh War

1873–1904 · 19th century

The Aceh War was the long conflict between the Netherlands and the Aceh Sultanate in northern Sumatra, begun by a Dutch invasion in 1873. The Dutch took the capital but faced decades of guerrilla resistance led by Islamic scholars and chiefs. Sultan Muhammad Daud Syah surrendered in 1903, though fighting went on for years, and the war completed Dutch control of the outer islands of the Dutch East Indies.
