1562–1611 · 16th century

Katō Kiyomasa was a Japanese general of Toyotomi Hideyoshi who received northern Higo in 1588 and became a leading commander in the invasions of Korea. Siding with Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara in 1600, he gained all of Higo and built the great castle of Kumamoto. His son lost the domain in 1632, and it passed to the Hosokawa.
